Bangladesh Awami League statement in protest against UN Resident Coordinator Gwen Lewis's comments

Bangladesh Awami League statement in protest against UN Resident Coordinator Gwen Lewis's comments

Bangladesh Awami League notes with deep concern that UN Resident Representative Gwen Lewis is implementing the political agenda of a particular individual or group in Bangladesh. Her comments on the presence or absence of Bangladesh Awami League in the upcoming elections have disappointed and angered the entire nation. We believe that this is Gwen Lewis' personal statement, not the observation or comment of the UN. The UN certainly does not support such biased comments on the internal affairs of any country. Gwen Lewis did not just make such comments today. She has been working to establish the dominance of external forces within the Bangladesh state for a long time. Her biased activities will make it difficult for Bangladesh to transition to democracy. We strongly condemn and protest against Gwen Lewis' biased comments.

Gwen Lewis commented that 'even if there is no Awami League, the upcoming elections can be inclusive if people participate properly'. However, a large section of the population in Bangladesh supports Awami League.  If that public does not participate in the elections, how will the elections be inclusive? Again, if the leaders and activists of the Awami League, supporters and voters do not vote in the elections, how will the people participate properly?

Representatives of international organizations give advice or guidelines to strengthen the democratic culture and system of any country. However, even if it sounds bad, Gwen Lewis's comments will create instability in Bangladeshi politics. Which will hinder the movement of the people of the country to restore democracy. I urge all international organizations, including the United Nations, who want to work for the democratic progress of Bangladesh to maintain neutrality and provide comments or advice that reflect the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh.
